    Healing from Traumatic Experiences

Person healing from PTSD and trauma - finding safety and recovery through evidence-based trauma therapy

Trauma changes the way we see ourselves, others, and the world. Whether it's a single event or a series of painful experiences, the effects can linger long after the danger has passed. Nightmares, flashbacks, hypervigilance, or feeling emotionally numb are just a few of the ways trauma shows up in daily life.

At A New Day Psychology, I provide compassionate, evidence-based therapy to help you process what happened, reduce symptoms, and reclaim a sense of safety and control. Healing is possible—you don't have to stay stuck in survival mode. If a distressing life event or memory is causing current emotional, behavioral, or physical symptoms, EMDR therapy may be beneficial.

    Types of Trauma

    Understanding Trauma

Trauma can come in many forms, including:

    Childhood abuse or neglect

    Sexual assault or violence

    Medical trauma or traumatic birth

    Sudden loss or grief

    Accidents or natural disasters

    Religious or spiritual trauma

Ongoing exposure to stress, criticism, or emotional harm

"Regardless of the source, your story is valid. Therapy offers a safe place to face the past without being defined by it."

    How Trauma Therapy Helps

    In therapy, we work to:

    Process and Heal Past Wounds

Therapy provides a safe, structured environment to gently explore and process traumatic memories, moving them from an active wound to a memory that no longer controls your present.

Regain Control Over Emotions and Reactions

Understand how trauma impacts your body's "fight, flight, or freeze" response and acquire skills to bring your system back to a state of safety and calm.

    Identify and Shift Negative Beliefs

Challenge the damaging self-blame and limiting beliefs (like "I am unsafe" or "I am unworthy") that trauma often creates, fostering a more compassionate and accurate self-view.

    Strengthen Healthy Coping Skills

Develop effective, non-destructive tools for distress tolerance, boundary setting, and self-soothing to replace old, unhelpful survival mechanisms.

    Improve Relationships

By healing core attachment wounds and regulating emotional responses, you can build deeper, more secure connections with others.

    Reclaim Your Life and Future

Move beyond survival mode to experience greater joy, purpose, and presence, empowering you to build the life you truly desire.

    Evidence-Based Approaches

I draw on proven methods for trauma treatment, including:

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

    – Helps the brain in processing distressing memories, making them less vivid, less emotionally intense, and integrated into a healthy memory network.

    Internal Family Systems (IFS)

    – IFS helps you heal trauma by viewing your mind as a family of "parts" (such as the wounded child or the critic) and guiding you to access your core "Self" (calm, compassionate leadership) to restore internal harmony and safety.

    Flash Technique

    – This approach is a gentle and rapid way to calm painful memories by quickly distracting your brain while you think about the memory, allowing you to process it without feeling overwhelmed.

Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) / Tapping

    – EFT combines mindful exposure to the painful memory with gentle tapping on meridian points to rapidly calm the nervous system, disrupt the brain's stress response, and reduce the emotional charge associated with the trauma.

    CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy)

    – CBT helps you manage trauma symptoms by identifying and reshaping the unhelpful thought patterns and negative beliefs that were created by the trauma, leading to healthier emotional responses and behaviors.

    ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy)

    – ACT helps you move forward from trauma by encouraging acceptance of difficult internal experiences (thoughts and feelings) while committing to actions that align with your deepest personal values, regardless of the trauma symptoms.

Each treatment plan is customized to your needs, with the pace guided by your comfort and readiness.
