Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder- OCD
Dealing with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) can feel like being trapped in a cycle of overwhelming thoughts and repetitive behaviors. Dr. Pottenger utilizes Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), a highly effective and evidence-based therapy specifically designed to help you break free from the grip of OCD. Your thoughts don't have to control you. With the right treatment, you can begin to live a life that aligns with what matters most to you instead of making choices based on fear or anxiety.
OCD can show up in many ways:
- You're constantly worried about getting sick, touching dirty things, or spreading germs. You might wash your hands a lot, clean excessively, or avoid certain places.
- You have scary, unwanted thoughts about hurting yourself or others, even though you would never actually do it. You might check things repeatedly (like if you locked the door) or avoid sharp objects.
- You have a strong need for things to be perfectly even, balanced, or in a specific order. If something isn't "just right," you feel very uncomfortable and might keep arranging or counting things until it is.
- You're overly worried about being a "bad" person, sinning, or doing something morally wrong. You might pray excessively, confess small things repeatedly, or constantly try to be "pure."
- You have constant doubts and worries about your romantic relationship – like if you truly love your partner, if they love you, or if the relationship is "right." You might constantly analyze your feelings or seek reassurance.
- You experience disturbing and unwanted sexual thoughts or images that go against your values. These thoughts cause a lot of distress, and you might avoid certain situations or constantly try to prove these thoughts aren't "true."
- You become overly aware and worried about normal body functions like blinking, breathing, or your heartbeat. You might try to control them, which only makes you more aware.
- You get stuck on big, unanswerable questions about life, death, the universe, or reality, leading to endless worrying and thinking about them.
