Specialty therapy for St. Louis, MO — without the commute
From the Central West End to Soulard, U. City, Webster Groves, and the I-270 suburbs, St. Louis clients use telehealth to sidestep a frustrating commute on I-64 or I-44. You can take a session from home, from a private office on Wash U's campus, or from your apartment in the CWE.
St. Louis clients often come from the medical and biotech corridor (BJC HealthCare, Washington University School of Medicine, SSM, the Cortex district) or from financial and legal firms in Clayton. We also see students and faculty at Wash U and SLU, plus families navigating fertility care at the Sher Institute and Wash U Fertility & Reproductive Medicine.
Why St. Louis residents choose this practice
- No more I-64 / Highway 40 construction or downtown parking
- Same therapist whether you live in Clayton or St. Charles
- Specialized ERP for OCD that local clinics often refer out for
- Discreet sessions — no walking past colleagues in a Clayton office tower
- Evening hours that work around BJC, Mercy and SSM shift schedules

St. Louis therapy FAQ
Can I do a session from a Wash U or SLU office?
Yes — as long as it is private and quiet. Many of our STL clients log in from a closed office in the BJC complex or a Wash U lab building between cases, but a home setting usually feels safer for sensitive material.
Are you licensed to see Illinois-side (Metro East) clients?
Yes. Through PSYPACT, Dr. Pottenger is authorized to see clients located in Illinois — including O'Fallon, Belleville, Edwardsville and the rest of the Metro East — at the time of session.
Do you work with Wash U Fertility patients?
Yes. We see a number of clients going through IUI, IVF and recurrent pregnancy loss with Wash U Fertility & Reproductive Medicine and the Sher Institute. See the infertility counseling page for details.
What if my insurance is BJC / Anthem / Cigna?
We are in-network with Cox Health Plans and Aetna only. STL clients on Anthem, BJC, UHC or Cigna are billed at the self-pay rate with a superbill for out-of-network reimbursement.
Is telehealth as effective as in-person therapy for OCD?
Yes — research on exposure and response prevention (ERP) delivered by video shows outcomes comparable to in-person care, and home-based exposures are often more useful clinically because we can work directly with your real environment.
